The Highway 34 Coalition was founded in 1990 by Charlie McChesney as a bi-state coalition, which actively supports the completion of US 34 as a four-lane expressway that will provide a safe and reliable transportation corridor connecting the region to the global economy.
The coalition’s priority is upgrading the 23.6 miles of two-lane between Monmouth, IL and Burlington, IA to a four-lane highway. In a ten-year span from 1995 – 2005, 775 accidents occurred on this two-lane segment, resulting in 353 injuries and 12 fatalities. IDOT has also identified three high-accident locations within this 23.6 mile stretch of road. According to the Traffic Safety Bureau, a 40% reduction in serious injury and fatal crashes can be expected on a highway improved from two-lanes to four-lanes.
